Council To Map Bass Coast Shire Drainage

Bass Coast Shire Council and the community will soon have access to more accurate drainage information.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 27th May 2005 - Back to News

Over the next few months Council Officers will map all drainage pits and pipes in the Shire and record their condition and capacity using a highly accurate Satellite Positioning system.

Council’s Assets Director, Guy Wilson-Browne, says the information will assist Council to quickly locate drains in the event of flooding or toxic spills.

"It will also greatly assist in the maintenance of drains and allow Council to provide more accurate information to the community on drainage issues when requested," said Mr Wilson-Browne.

"The ongoing work that is required to maintain drains and pits in the Shire is more than most people would imagine.

"There are in excess of 1800 Council drainage pits in Inverloch alone," Mr Wilson-Browne explained.

Mr Wilson-Browne said community members may notice Council Officers inspecting drains around their properties in the coming months.

"If Council Officers are required to access peoples’ properties the property owners will be notified in writing."

Mapping and inspections of drains began in Inverloch two months ago and will continue in all urban areas within the Shire, with Wonthaggi to follow this week.

For further information contact Council’s GIS Coordinator, Paul Lennox, on (03) 5671 2211 or (03) 5951 3311.
