Residents facing the prospect of a post-bushfire clean up are advised that support and advice is available from Latrobe City Council and Baw Baw Shire Council.

By Latrobe City Council and Baw Baw Shire Council - 13th February 2009 - Back to News

Both Councils are working through these issues and are aware that there are a number of complex issues relating to the disposal of household waste.

After a large bushfire there are a range of waste issues to be managed including the disposal of general rubbish, vehicles, concrete and asbestos.

As part of the recovery effort, Councils are able to advise residents on how to remove waste safely and who to contact for additional support.

Waste issues can range from something as complex as asbestos disposal to relatively simple things such as bin replacement.

Bin replacement can be dealt with relatively quickly. Residents whose bins have been damaged or destroyed are advised to contact:

  • Cleanaway directly on 1800 007 543 or 03 5133 6872 for Latrobe City residents.

OR

  • Janice Hawkey on 03 5624 2465 for Baw Baw Shire residents.

For general rubbish, including hard waste, fire affected Latrobe City residents can use the:

  • Yinnar Transfer station at Whitelaw’s Track, Yinnar South, 8.00am to 12noon Monday to Friday and 10am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday;
  • Morwell Transfer station at Porter’s Road, off Tramway Road, Morwell 8am to 12 noon seven days a week or
  • Traralgon Transfer station at Depot Road, off Liddiard Road, Traralgon, 1pm to 5pm seven days a week

Baw Baw Shire residents are advised to use the following:

  • Trafalgar Landfill, Old Thorpdale Road, Trafalgar, 10am to 4pm seven days a week.
  • Lardner Transfer Station, Simpson Road Lardner, 10am to 4pm Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday
  • Neerim South Transfer Station, Sheffield Road, Neerim South, Wednesday and Thursday 11 and 12 February 2009 only from 10am to 5pm otherwise 10am to 4pm on, Friday and Sunday
  • Erica Transfer Station, Mathieson Road, Erica 12noon to 4pm Monday, Wednesday and Sunday.

The above services will be free of charge, however, residents are asked to leave their names, addresses and vehicle registration numbers as confirmation. Residents are reminded that all debris for collection must be fully extinguished and cool before it can be disposed of.

Fire affected residents disposing steel, burned vehicles, steel roof and wall sheeting will need to make sure that these materials have been separated for recycling purposes.

Concrete and masonry should also be separated for recycling. These materials can be taken to the transfer stations listed above.

Of particular concern is the disposal of asbestos waste.

Asbestos waste is hazardous and its handling, disposal and transportation is tightly controlled by the Environment Protection Authority.

The EPA recommends that those who have asbestos on their property consult a professional removalist. Details can be found in the Yellow Pages.

While residents can legally remove small amounts of asbestos from their houses, Latrobe City and Baw Baw Shire Council strongly urge those who wish to do so themselves to book a consultation with the waste education officer who will provide a special asbestos removal kit.

Asbestos should only be disposed of at an appropriate site and must be wrapped before transport. Asbestos removal kits are available from council. To obtain advice or a disposal kit, Latrobe City residents should make an appointment with George Lambos on 0427 057 122. Baw Baw Shire residents should contact Shekar Atla on 03 5624 2464.

Latrobe City Council and Baw Baw Shire Council are currently investigating a site for the disposal of dead stock. Details will be disclosed when they become available.

For further information residents in Latrobe City Council should contact the Recovery Office on 1800 017 777. Baw Baw Shire residents should contact the Baw Baw Recovery Hotline on 1300 859 446.
