Students Learn To Express Emotion Through PhotographyStudents from Churchill’s Lumen Christi Primary School Camera Club have worked very hard over several months to collate photos for their exhibition at the Latrobe Regional Gallery By Latrobe City - 23rd November 2010 - Back to News which opened on Monday 22 November.
Principal, Cathy Blackford, said that the Camera Club had formed after the school secured a grant.
"We were lucky enough to get a $3000 grant through School-Focused Youth Services, a Victorian Government service aimed at supporting collaborative structures to keep students at risk engaged in school activities.
"The budding young photographers, from grades three to six, made great use of eight new cameras and memory cards purchased with the grant. Students took photos both at home and at school and presented them to fellow club members weekly, for consideration and discussion," Ms Blackford explained.
Latrobe Regional Gallery’s senior curator, Fiona West, said the exhibition of photographs was both candid and touching.
"These students worked under the guidance of photographer Neale Stratford, Monash University, Gippsland Campus. They used their photos to identify and express emotion and the sharing of their work prompted great discussion and a feeling of identity and belonging.
"We are privileged here at the Gallery to be able to display these works in our new children’s exhibition area and wish the students all the best for their future artistic and creative endeavours," Ms West concluded.
‘Expressing emotion through photography’ is on display at the Latrobe Regional Gallery until 31 January 2011.
