By Latrobe Shire Council - 11th August 2004 - Back to News

Latrobe City’s International Relations Officer, Yuki Poole, said this year’s event will be the second ever Japanese Day hosted by Council and follows the success of the inaugural event held in December last year.

"Japanese Day 2004 will be a celebratory festival comprising of various Japanese activities, such as cultural workshops, performances and stalls. People will be able to learn more about Japanese crafts and there will be items for sale including delicious, healthy Japanese food and beverages. If people have ever wanted to try sake or sushi, this will be their chance," Ms Poole said.

The day will also feature a diverse range of workshops in calligraphy, toy making and bonsai, and students from Elizabeth Street Primary School in Moe and St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School in Traralgon will perform at the event.

"Council’s International Relations Unit is very keen to highlight the global nature of communities and to demonstrate that there are a great many people with different cultural backgrounds living and working in regional and rural Victoria. The State Government’s Skilled Migration Program testifies to this and Latrobe City is now at the forefront of welcoming overseas people to come and live in the municipality," Ms Poole said.

"The Japanese Day festival is one way in which Latrobe residents will have the opportunity to learn about different cultures, and it is a wonderful opportunity for me to proudly demonstrate the highlights of my Japanese culture to others in the local community," Ms Poole concluded.
