Cans for fines program benefits Latrobe community

During the month of November Latrobe City Library Service is sponsoring a community food drive which can also reduce library patron’s overdue fines.

By Latrobe City Council - 6th November 2006 - Back to News

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Lisa Price said that the Cans for Fines program had been conducted by the Latrobe City Library Service over the past four years and proven to be a big success.

"Following the success of this program in previous years, we are inviting patrons of the Latrobe City library service to participate in this community fundraising project. The idea of the program is simple - wipe $2 off your overdue fines for every can of food or non-perishable item donated," Cr Price said.

"Last year over 300 individual food items were donated. The items were all given to a local charity for distribution before Christmas. As a result over $600 in overdue fines were also cleared from library customer records," Cr Price explained.

Cr Price concluded that the libraries helped to build communities not only with the resources they provide but in taking a leading role in social support initiatives such as the Cans for Fines program.
