Independents stand alone against a multi linguistic state

The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, today condemned the latest in the long line of divisive social reforms implemented by the Bracks Government.

"This week in Parliament, the State Government introduced further changes building on its divisive racial and religious legislation by passing a bill which will ultimately cost the taxpayers millions and undermines Australia’s support for multicultural values, language and autonomy," Mr Ingram said.

"The bill brings in reporting requirements for all government agencies which will force compliance with the provisions of the bill. It introduces changes much greater than the community has endorsed.

"The government has consulted widely, but again has not listened to its critics. Its discussion paper drew considerable opposition with individual submissions strongly opposed the legislating of the new multicultural provisions

"The state has used the Canadian model for its bill, which has caused significant divisions and problems in Canada.

"It was extremely disappointing to see the so called conservative Liberal and National parties lining up to support the bill, with myself and my independent colleague, Russell Savage MP, being the only ones against it."

Mr Ingram said all Australians value the significant contribution that migrants from all countries have made to Australia bringing with them a diversity of culture, religion and cuisine, making this country a vibrant liveable wealthy and tolerant nation.

"But by legislating as they have done, the government will divide rather than unite," Mr Ingram concluded.
