Wildcats having been tipped as favourites to play a revived Moorabbin team under the banner of Waverley/Oakleigh Panthers were expected to offer home team supporters a thriller. So, it came as a surprise to see Wildcats suffer their second consecutive loss at Fregon Reserve last Sunday.

In contrast to the match against Altona dominated by the forwards, the return of fullback Reno Sobari saw Wildcats backline find form and the exceptional ball skills from winger Hori Teepa, Frank Camilleri and Tommy Tangohau in support. From this in the twentieth minute of hard play, a grubber kick from centre David Noda saw forward Anthony Huxford score the only try in this half unconverted.

The early stages of the second half Waverley came our firing. The physical pressure witnessed from both sides did nothing to demise Panthers as winger Benjamin Peniaminia caught Wildcats napping to score the first try of this half for Matt Wallis to convert leading 6-4.

The Wildcats hit back minutes later when a succession of inside passes saw forward Robert Hall scoot over to reduce the score to take the lead 8-6. With only five minutes left, Waverley’s five eighth Dion Harvey stormed through Wildcats defence for touch down as Matt Wallis converts with the final score at full time 12-8.

This week Wildcats take on Southern Sharks at Maryvale Recreation Reserve, Morwell on Sunday at 2PM. This is tipped to be the match of the round to secure third spot.

Players Award: Robert Hall; Anthony Huxford; Hori Teepa. Players Player: Reno Sobari.
