National Tree Day Community Planting Event

You’re invited to join Australia’s biggest nature care initiative and tree planting event by volunteering at Latrobe City Council’s National Tree Day event at Narracan Creek in Newborough on Sunday 30 July from 10am to 12 noon.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said that tree day engaged the community in hands-on, fun, positive environmental action.

"The best part is that it engages our local community in their local community, and in keeping with our commitment to health and wellbeing, tree day activities provide social interaction as well as physical work.

"Volunteering at a National Tree Day event is a great way to experience the many benefits of spending time in nature," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"In the past five years, Latrobe City Council has planted over 75,000 plants for the environment, with the help of volunteers, service clubs, primary school students, community groups and local businesses.

"This year, we have chosen Narracan Creek in Newborough as our National Tree Day community planting site. We’ve had a number of locals, including young fishermen, ParkRun users, and Moe-Yallourn Rail Trail volunteers approach us with offers of help to clean up the creek. We will be focusing on the Haigh Street end and our big aim is to plant canopy trees that will grow to shade the creek. We also want to open up an access point to the water there, so that people can sit with a fishing rod and relax," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"If you’re looking for a way to get your hands dirty, help the environment and meet other like-minded locals, come along. And if you can’t get to the Narracan Creek sit there are a number of other events taking place around the municipality. Or, why not plant some trees or shrubs in your own yard?" Cr O’Callaghan concluded.

To tie in with the National Tree Day events, Latrobe City libraries will be running story times with tree themes and native plant giveaways from 1 August to 4 August.
