News BulletinBass Coast News By Bass Coast Shire Council - 17th November 2006 - Back to News inverloch foreshore pathway update
In July this year, Bass Coast Shire Council suspended the construction of the Inverloch Foreshore Shared Pathway due to the uncovering of potential indigenous artefacts.
A cultural heritage assessment had to be undertaken before any decision could be made on a continuation or change to the works. The report was undertaken in consultation with the local aboriginal communities.
The cultural heritage report, in which an archaeologist identifies two sites of cultural significance within the project area, has been lodged with Aboriginal Affairs Victoria (AAV). Ministerial consent is needed in order to continue with the project. As the State Government is currently in caretaker mode prior to the upcoming election, it is not clear when the Minister will be able to sign off on the report.
Realistically, a response is not expected until December. If approval is granted, Council will need to fulfil any stipulated conditions. This may include monitoring of site areas, the relocation of site material and/or signage and interpretation relating to the disturbed site.
In light of the uncertainties on when the work will be able to proceed, Council has sought permission to remove the barricading and make the area safe. AAV has granted that request and prior to Christmas the barricading will be taken down and the area back-filled, to eliminate any tripping hazards.
LONG WALK
In 2004, AFL legend Michael Long set out to walk from Melbourne to Canberra to meet with Prime Minister John Howard. His aim was to highlight the plight of his people and to take a step towards uniting all Australians.
The Long Walk has now become an annual event.
In December 2005, 10,000 indigenous and non-indigenous Australians joined Michael Long and the original walkers on a community walk around Princes Park in a statement of strength, unity and inspiration.
This year, the Long Walk will take place in Albert Park on Sunday 3 December. The walk is approx 5km and will raise money for the Sir Douglas Nicholls Fellowship for Indigenous Leadership. After The Long Walk –there will be a celebration of live music and entertainment.

V8 Supercars
With the Grand Finale of the Supercars drawing closer, visitors and residents are reminded that considerable traffic is expected on the roads around Phillip Island from 8 to 12 December.
Residents and visitors also need to be aware that Bass Coast is currently in a fire danger period (FDP). This will impact on people camping or barbequing outside of designated BBQ facilities over the Supercars weekend. Anyone planning to camp over the weekend, or across the summer period is advised to check with the CFA or Council on what is permissible during a FDP.
In addition to the regular patrons (with numbers in excess of 60,000 expected at the event), Victorian school students will have the chance to experience the V8 Supercars first hand, as part of "Students Free Friday" on 8 December. School groups accompanied by a teacher will be admitted free to the track. For further details or to register for "Student Free Friday" please go to www.V8supercarevents.com.au. Registration closes on Friday 24 November.
