Ingram Urges Residents To Check ID Of Door-To-Door Salespeople

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, is encouraging home owners to check the identification of salespeople calling on their homes to offer services

By Craig Ingram - 11th September 2009 - Back to News

Mr Ingram’s office and local police have received calls this week from district residents concerned at the validity of salespeople calling at Gippsland homes and offering a service to change light globes and shower heads to a more environmentally friendly option.

""While it appears that the company targeting the area at present is legitimate, there have been instances in other towns elsewhere in the state where home owners have been scammed by people posing as door-to-door salespeople.

"Home owners should ask for photo identification of anyone attending their property to offer any service.

"Residents should also remember that they do not have to take up any offer from door-to-door salespeople, regardless of if they are selling electricity, telephone services, carpet cleaning or light globes."

Mr Ingram said concern has also been raised recently by residents towards the practices of some door-to-door salespeople working for electricity companies and that he had taken the matter up with the Minister for Consumer Affairs.

"Some salespeople can be quite pushy and some also make it seem that they are there in an official capacity, even going to the extent of wearing safety vests and carrying radios.

"The reality is that if you do not want the service, be polite and then close the door.

"Anyone with concerns should contact Consumer Affairs Victoria or my office," Mr Ingram said.
