Beanie Festival’s ‘Colours Of The Country’ A-Head In ArtAs iconic Australian headwear, the beanie has been celebrated by the Alice Springs Beanie Festival since 1996. By Latrobe City - 19th March 2009 - Back to News In fact at the 2008 festival more than ten-thousand people gathered to view more than five thousand examples of the wild and woolly headgear, crafted by beanie fans from all over Australia.
But aware that not everyone can travel to the Red Centre for the fun, ‘The Beanie Festival’ is celebrating its thirteenth year by touring an exhibition of beanies; and our own Latrobe Regional Gallery is proud to be presenting this very Aussie exhibition, ‘Colours of the Country’, from Saturday 14 March.
Latrobe City’s arts director, Julie Adams, said the exhibition demonstrates the growth of the beanie as an art form over the years, and the imagination, creativity and fine craftsmanship presented in each piece.
"It is a colourful exhibition encapsulating the whimsical essence of the Beanie Festival," Ms Adams explained.
"The collection also highlights the works produced by Indigenous artists from the Central Desert region who are regular collaborators in this cross-cultural event.
"An exhibition loved by all, the collection will inspire audiences to laugh, don crazy headwear, and knit," Ms Adams added.
‘Colours of the Country’ opens on Saturday 14 March and continues until 12 April. The official opening will take place at the Gallery on Friday 13 March at 6pm. All are welcome.
Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Monday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The gallery is closed public holidays. Entry is free.
