Committee appointment boost for Yarram water issue

Wellington Shire Council is giving its full backing to efforts to address falling groundwater levels in Yarram district, as one of its councillors is appointed to a new Consultative Committee established by the State Government to examine the issue

By Wellington Shire Council - 15th March 2004 - Back to News

Councillor Peter Garlick is on the Consultative Committee for the Yarram Water Supply Protection Area (groundwater) - joining Yarram district representatives such as local landholders and irrigators, who are all united in their concerns about the impact the drop in the groundwater level is having on the local area, both environmentally and economically.

The committee, which recently held its first meeting, has been established by the Minister for Water John Thwaites to draw up a draft Management Plan covering water supply in the Yarram district and is due to present its report in 18 months.

Water experts from Southern Rural Water and a staff member from the Department of Sustainability and Environment will act as advisors to the body.

Said Wellington’s Mayor John Jago: "Falling groundwater levels in the Yarram area, combined with a recent drought situation across the shire and supply issues relating to the Thomson, Macalister and Latrobe river catchment areas, have highlighted more than ever just how dependent we are on water.

"With this in mind we greatly appreciate having representation on this very important consultative committee. We will give whatever support we can to help make sure measures are put in place that ensure this highly productive and important agricultural area has adequate water supplies available to protect the well-being of water-dependent businesses and the local community."
