Morwell Leisure Centre to celebrate ten year anniversaryThe Morwell Leisure Centre is gearing up for a huge day of free birthday celebrations when it turns ten years old on Sunday 4 April. By Latrobe City Council - 26th March 2004 - Back to News Centre Manager, Sandra Ashford, said that the day would be a mix of fun events for all the family as well as an acknowledgment of the wide variety of sports and leisure activities that regularly take place at the Centre.
"We will be offering fitness programs throughout the day such as circuit training, chi pilates, COTA exercise classes for the older adult, boxing and aqua aerobics so that visitors can try them out for free.
"For the more sports-minded visitor, there are come and try sessions for basketball, volleyball and netball, along with sessions in the pool with both the Morwell and Traralgon Swimming Clubs, and the Aussie Flippers," Ms Ashford explained.
"For those that have worked up an appetite after their fitness class or netball game, there will be a free barbecue from 2pm and children will be entertained by face painting, treasure hunts and games such as three-legged races. In the pool, Nessie will be making an appearance between 1pm and 4pm," Ms Ashford said.
Ms Ashford added that there would also be prize giveaways, a raffle and a birthday cake.
"We really want to make this a day for all the family. Entry is free and specially discounted memberships will be on offer too. Come along between 10am and 6pm for a great, local day out.
"The Morwell Leisure Centre is a popular arena for many sports, swimming and fitness classes. There is an activity or program for people from all ages and walks of life, from babies and preschoolers doing learn to swim classes; school children doing netball, basketball and volleyball to mature adults and seniors taking part in fitness classes," Ms Ashford added.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss said that fitness and health issues were constantly in the spotlight with media reports on the nation’s obesity, poor diet and exercise regimes.
"Life for today’s family is generally more sedentary than it would have been for our predecessors and with fast food and computer games, health and fitness has tended to take a back seat. This ten year anniversary day may be just the catalyst to get yourself and your family back into shape, as well as taking advantage of the membership discounts on offer.
"The Morwell Leisure Centre is a first class facility for the community and the staff is ready to welcome all visitors, young, old, fit or otherwise for a fun-filled day of celebrations," Cr Middlemiss concluded.
