Gippsland Fires: Overnight Shift Improves Outlook

Firefighters score wins overnight with the consolidation of the southern containment line

By DSE/CFA - 18th February 2003 - Back to News

Gippsland region firefighters have been scoring wins overnight with some excellent work on consolidating the southern containment line of the Bogong Complex South fire.

In the Dargo area, the backburn joining the Hogtown and Crooked river sectors was completed in difficult conditions.

"Our objective was to complete this part of the fireline last night– this was a good win for us," Incident Controller Aaron Gelobter said.

The fires burning further north in the Razor Track and West Buffalo area are still causing concern for the North East Region and Gippsland crews will be supporting the suppression effort here from a newly established base camp at Surveyors Creek, north of Licola.

Orbost Incident Controller, Rocky Barca said that a quiet night with mild temperatures enabled crews to continue good consolidation work extending eastward.

"That work will pick up again this morning with further backburning and consolidation of control lines to protect communities in the Cabanandra and Tubbut areas," Mr Barca said.

"We’re on top of the situation here, burning well within prescriptions, but residents will see a lot of smoke in the area as we continue our backburns."

Residents are reminded not to get complacent and to have their Bushfire Plans ready to activate, especially with the weather warming up over the next few days.

Anyone living, working or travelling in Gippsland who has concerns or questions about the fires should contact the Gippsland Community Fire Information Line: 1800 668 066. This number is now operational between 8.00am and 8.00pm daily
