Department of Primary Industries: Firefighting Specialists Arrive From New ZealandSpecialist firefighters from New Zealand have arrived in Gippsland By DSE/CFA - 20th January 2003 - Back to News Tell us your opinion See what others have said Specialist firefighters from New Zealand have arrived in Gippsland to add their expertise to the fight to control fires burning through the north east of the state.
The contingent of 13 from the New Zealand Department of Conservation in Canterbury, spent some time in the Department of Primary Industries’ Regional Office in Traralgon tonight, discussing the fire situation with Acting Regional Manager Neville Penrose and Regional Fire Manger David Tainsh.
New Zealand Team Leader Bruce James said that they were here to provide some specialist skills in fighting fires in steep, remote country.
"We’re hoping to be able to provide some relief for tired crews and to give a fresh perspective on tactics for this campaign," Mr James said.
"We are familiar with steep country and can offer sustained performance in difficult terrain and in difficult conditions," he said.
The Bogong Complex of fires in the north east has burned through 45000 ha and is causing concern for many communities in Victoria’s Alpine country. Fire crews are working hard to protect these communities and to ensure that people are putting their fire plans in to action in plenty of time.
The New Zealand team will be deployed initially to the fire at Tubbut to help with this remote fire where resources are stretched to the limit. They will then be deployed to other fires where most needed.
