GippsTAFE: Community Arts ProjectCommunity Arts Project Mural unveiled By Eimear McNelis - 10th October 2002 - Back to News Tell us your opinion See what others have said The Gippsland Vocational Training Unit (GVTU) has recently unveiled its Community Arts Project Mural to the Morwell Community at a special unveiling ceremony.
The ceremony was held at the GVTU with Latrobe City Mayor,Tony Hanning, unveiling the mural.
Students Josh Balcombe, Nicole Hooton, Rani Jory, Travis Sim, Shannon Killeen, Jayde Barnes, Laura Stelter, Nicole Van Rhysbergen, Craig Norton, David Goldsmith, Alfie Baldacchino and Steven Johnson got together every Wednesday to work as group, solving problems and overcoming obstacles to produce the mural for the community.
"I have been really taken by the atmosphere here at the GVTU. These staff are doing great work with these special people," said Jeff Gunningham, CEO of Central Gippsland Institute of TAFE.
"Everyone has done a great job and you all should be proud."
Leanne Bruce, Coordinator of the GVTU, said that it was the first time the GVTU has participated in a Community Arts Project and congratulated all of the participants.
Latrobe City Mayor, Tony Hanning, said "Art is a fantastic pathway to long term problem solving; it is a way of thinking."
"This group has worked in unison to give this mural to the public. I believe it is an achievement of the highest order."
The mural hangs on one wall in the front garden of the GVTU in Collins Street and all of the Morwell community is invited to drop by and have a look.
The Gippsland Vocational Training Unit is a community based agency in Gippsland. The service developed by the agency is unique, in that it is specifically designed to facilitate opportunities for young people aged 15-26 in rural communities to access vocational education, employment and personal development training in their community.
