Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said Council had made a commitment to the Federal Government in applications it has made for Commonwealth Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts funding for the establishment of television retransmission sites in areas with poor or non-existent television reception. The applications require commitments by local government to fund ongoing maintenance.
“Many communities are plagued by poor television reception. There are communities, particularly in the Strzeleckis, where the television signal from Mount Tassie is blocked by intervening hills. In many cases the signal bounces along valleys and off nearby trees, resulting in ghosting at best, and often a picture that is so distorted, that some channels are unwatchable. A clear television picture is something most of us take for granted, but the fact is that for some citizens, no matter how tall or good their aerial is, the signal reaching them is not good enough for a decent picture to be received,” Cr Jenkins said.
“The Commonwealth Government is aware of the problem and has invited applications for funding grants to install additional transmission equipment in television black spots areas, providing local councils are prepared to accept the ongoing operational and maintenance of the new service.
“A television reception field survey was undertaken across a broad area of Latrobe Valley covering the northern foothills of the Strzelecki Ranges. This identified deficiencies in Boolarra, the Traralgon South/Callignee area, and the Jeeralang/Budgeree area,” Cr Jenkins said.
“I am delighted to say that Council has undertaken to accept the ongoing operational and maintenance of the new services, and therefore funding applications for the three services have been lodged.
“Television is not merely a means of entertainment. In today’s world it is a vital means of communication which people rely on for their news. The recent terrorism events of America portrayed live to the rest of the world is an indication of how our expectations have changed. We expect to be able to be informed about events happening anywhere in the world from wherever in the world we happen to be.
“Today’s technology allows clear pictures to be transmitted in a fraction of a second from New York to Australia, yet amazingly there are problems transmitting those pictures from a just a few kilometres away into communities like Boolarra. Hopefully those problems will soon be overcome,” Cr Jenkins concluded.
