Party Safe this Festive Season

Gippsland councils, Victoria Police, Rotary and Community Roadsafe councils have launched PartySafe materials

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 19th December 2001 - Back to News

Gippsland councils, Victoria Police, Rotary and Community Roadsafe councils have launched PartySafe materials to help people celebrate safely during the festive season.

"PartySafe in Gippsland – How to plan and hold a Safe Party in your area" is a brochure that provides information for hosts and is available from council offices and police stations. Copies have also been sent to local secondary schools.

"The materials are aimed at ensuring people enjoy a safe festive season, especially if alcohol is involved," said Helen Padalini, Community Support and Development Officer with Council.

Private party hosts are encouraged to register their function at a local police station and enquire about free RoadSafe PartySafe packs. Each pack contains a calibrated glass that indicates the various versions of standard drinks as well as a blood alcohol concentration calendar.

PartySafe encourages hosts to think "P-A-R-T-Y" when planning their function.

P – Provide food – avoid salty food
A – Alternative drinks – provide non-alcoholic or low alcoholic drinks
R – Responsible serving – plan for and monitor alcohol consumption
T – Transport – use a designated driver or alternative transport
Y – Your party – your responsibility

Helen explained that planning a party, especially for young people, raises many issues. By working with local police and using the PartySafe kit, potential problems such as uninvited guests, excess noise and damage to property can be avoided or at least kept to a minimum.
