Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, has welcomed Wednesday’s visit of the State Co-ordination and Management Council as part of a visit to the region to inspect Latrobe Valley Ministerial Taskforce projects in progress and meet with representative stakeholders. The State Co-ordination and Management Council comprises the Secretaries of each Victorian Government Department and the visit is a requirement of the Ministerial Taskforce, which handed down its final report in June this year.

Cr Jenkins said it is important that the most senior public officials in Victoria inspect some of the works already underway and have face to face discussions with a number of the community and business stakeholders in the local area.

"I understand that the community is anxious to see concrete evidence of works getting underway on the more visible larger scale projects. After some months of complex project planning, I am delighted to note that some of the smaller works have already been completed and the next few months will show definite visible progress on projects across the wider municipality," Cr Jenkins said.

"The Latrobe Valley Ministerial Taskforce represents the first ever targeted response from any Government to the long standing social and economic problems for which the region is having to deal with.

"However, the State Government’s resources are comparatively limited and Council is very hopeful the Federal Government will ensure that some of its recently announced regional funding is applied to a number of the Latrobe Valley’s priority development projects.

"With many parts of the Latrobe Valley still containing some of the highest long term structural unemployment in Australia, now is the time for the Federal Government to demonstrate that it is prepared to progress a partnership approach," Cr Jenkins concluded.
