By Kiri Hiriaki - 2nd April 2002 - Back to News

In Short

  • Gippsland Rugby League kicks off in 2002, with many new and exciting prospects on the schedule.
  • Family Fun Day and Super 8s competition is being held in Sale at the McMillan Reserve (opposite lake) on Sunday, 14th April.

In Detail

Season 2002 looks to be back on track with Gippsland Rugby League, as the Competition between local clubs and Goulburn Murray teams have been set. Corowa, Wodonga, Twin City Hornets and Southern Raiders Jets are included into this season draw providing variation and a stronger competition. This competition will also form the selection of the State Team offering State Selectors easy access to country players. The concept is well received and supported by clubs within the Gippsland league, predominantly, offering as an excellent chance for our young players to display their wares. These matches will spread through the course of the regular season, and in doing so, would abolish the regular representative matches.

With the Melbourne Storm return to Olympic Park as its Home Ground, the matches against archrivals Goulburn Murray will play prior to Storm matches at different venues and times. VRL have provided an opportunity for players from both Gippsland and Goulburn Murray to attend Storm matches immediately following their matches with all players and team management entering free of charge.

As a lead up to the start of this seasons competition that begins on Sunday, 21st April, a Family Fun Day is to be held on Sunday 14th April at McMillan Reserve, Sale (opposite Lake). Included in the fun day will be jumping castle, rides, 3 legged races, tug-o-war, potato sack races and many more fun games for the whole family. A Super 8s competition will also be played during the course of the day with prizes up for grabs. Closing date for entry forms is Thursday, 11th April by close of business day.

If you wish to enter a team or register as an individual player, please contact the league secretary on 5175 0733.

Yours in Rugby League, Kiri Hiriaki – Secretary
