Ingram calls on commitment against African Lovegrass

Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram has called on the Minister for Agriculture, Bob Cameron, to commit ongoing adequate funding to fight against African Lovegrass.

By Craig Ingram - 11th April 2006 - Back to News

"I have had representation from a number of local farmers who have serious concerns about the consequences of the intended downgrading of African Lovegrass in Gippsland, from Regionally Prohibited to Regionally Controlled, and the impact on weed control requirements that come with this downgrade," Mr Ingram said.

"These farmers have made considerable investments into the removal and control of African Lovegrass from their properties, and they are understandably disappointed that their efforts may be undermined if the weed is given a less stringent control status.

"The increasing numbers of smaller acreage blocks and hobby farms, along with lack of real enforcement of weed control in this area, is compounding the control of a range of weed species.

"Accordingly, I have written to the Minister for Agriculture to justify this decision and have requested that African Lovegrass continues to receive the highest level of controls to protect the productivity of the regions farming areas," Mr Ingram concluded.
