Get Your Motor Running…The Supercars Are Coming

V8 engines will be roaring onto Phillip Island from 8 -10 December, when the Grand Prix Circuit hosts the Grand Finale of the V8 Supercars.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 13th November 2006 - Back to News

In 2005, 66,000 people attended the event over three days and similar numbers are anticipated this year. In line with previous years’ attendance patterns, the largest crowd numbers are expected on the Sunday.

Council’s Special Events Coordinator, Frank Angarane said it was important to make local residents aware that the V8 Supercars are coming.

"We are certainly anticipating large crowds coming onto Phillip Island," said Mr Angarane.

"Because the event is running later in the year than usual, there is the possibility of significant other traffic in the area due to holiday makers, beach visitors, hot weather and the usual summer activities."

Mr Angarane advised people not attending the event to plan their trips in order to avoid inconvenience from the V8 Supercar traffic.

"Try and stay off Back Beach Road and Phillip Island Road in the morning and late afternoon, when patrons will be arriving at or leaving the circuit," advised Mr Angarane.

"There will be a number of changes to normal traffic routes across the weekend, to try and ensure a steady flow of traffic.

"These are similar to the traffic management plans that Council and the Police put in place for the Grand Prix," said Mr Angarane.

Residents are advised of the following traffic management plans:

  • Saturday, 9 December - traffic to the Circuit from Cowes will be via Berrys Beach Road
  • Sunday, 10 December – Back Beach Road will be one way in and one way out from the Circuit
  • Sunday, 10 December - the Blue Line will operate to Grantville

This year, there will be activities in Cowes on Saturday night for the first time during the V8 Supercars.

"The arrangements will be similar to the Grand Prix weekend," said Mr Angarane.

"There will be a licensed area in the Jetty Triangle with live bands playing in the evening.

"And we are hoping to attract some V8 or event related activities."

Mr Angarane advised that The Esplanade and Jetty Triangle will be closed on Saturday night.

Any other street closures in Cowes will be flexible and dependent on crowd numbers.
