Churchill To Host ‘Cultural Travelling Food Festival’A ‘Cultural Travelling Food Festival’ is taking place in Churchill this Friday 25 November at 1.30pm. By Latrobe City Council - 21st November 2005 - Back to News The Festival is a roving exhibition of food, art and storytelling designed to develop cross-cultural understanding between communities, and particularly migrant and refugee groups through the telling of stories and the sharing of recipes and food.
Latrobe City’s Arts Innovation Facilitator, Lynette Raven, said the Festival has been created by Neighbourhood House families living on both the Richmond and Collingwood public housing estates.
"The Festival developed as the result of many years of listening to women from diverse backgrounds communicating through the passion of food and cooking.
"Food and stories go together. There is nothing more fundamental to human cultures than the social act of sharing a meal and a conversation. We use food to celebrate and commiserate, to welcome and farewell, as a gesture of hospitality and friendship," Ms Raven said.
"Diverse multi-cultural food samples will be prepared by the Belgium Ave Neighbourhood House’s Cultural Catering Group. There will also be a screening of a video work by Dean McInerney based on the work of the Cultural Catering Group, Images and Stories from 'Cooking Stories' (A project by Julie Shiels), and story telling by Nga Diep and Bernardo Duarte. Turkish dancers will also be performing," Ms Raven explained.
"Participants are invited to bring along a favourite recipe to the event that will contribute to a recipe booklet that is being created throughout the event. A diverse cultural afternoon tea will be served.
Entry to the event is free, but bookings are essential. RSVP Lynette Raven, telephone 5128 5639, by 5pm Tuesday 22 November.
The Cultural Travelling Food Festival was launched in Melbourne and has travelled to a number of regional areas throughout Victoria.
