Wellington Youth Space – what’s your view?

Wellington Shire Council will meet with community groups this week as part of a review it is conducting on future use of the Wellington Youth Space.

By Wellington Shire Council - 6th September 2005 - Back to News

The Youth Space is on the upper level of the east wing of Sale Memorial Hall and the review is in line with the council’s Best Value Review process.

Wellington Mayor Peter Gault says the review aims to ensure the venue is meeting its goals in relation to the young people in the Shire.

Cr Gault said: "There have been several meetings with youth service providers and user groups in the past few weeks and more will follow in the next fortnight. We would also welcome any comment from the public regarding the present and future use of Youth Space."

Wellington Shire Council, Kilmany Uniting Care and Central Gippsland Health Service formed a partnership three years ago to establish the Wellington Youth Space to provide young people with a space for youth focussed activities in Sale.

"The partnership was formed with several visions in mind including: providing an avenue for the development of personal growth and leadership skills that can increase self-esteem as well as providing alternative forms of entertainment and recreation for young people.

"It also aimed to interrupt destructive patterns of behaviour, build job seeking skills and improve access to information and services for young people. This review is being held simply to see if those goals are being met and whether they are still appropriate."

Wellington Youth Space is currently used by a number of groups on a regular basis including FreeZA; Sale Skateboard Redevelopment Committee, Kr8 (Youth Arts), Unda Construction (Youth Theatre) and Freedom (Youth Support Group).

Central Gippsland Health Service’s youth counsellor and Kilmany Uniting Care’s youth housing worker also meet clients at the Youth Space one day a week.

Anyone interested in commenting on the Wellington Youth Space should contact the Council’s Youth Development Officer David Roberts on 1300 366 244.
