Refurbishment at Latrobe Regional Gallery

Latrobe Regional Gallery’s International Power Hazelwood Community Access Gallery has undergone refurbishments to make the gallery better suited to hanging exhibitions.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 25th August 2004 - Back to News

The first exhibitors to experience the improvements are artists from the Mainstreet Artwork program, whose exhibition ‘Signatures II’ is currently on display in the gallery.

Latrobe Regional Gallery Director, Louise Tegart, explained that the once highly visible brick walls and former window cavities in the Community Access Gallery have now been concealed with plaster.

"The alterations present fewer peripheral distractions, enabling exhibitors to hang their work without the limitations that the previous walls presented," Ms Tegart said.

"The Signatures II exhibition will benefit greatly from the refurbishment. Signatures II consists of the recent drawings, paintings and sculptures of up to 20 different artists. A series of sculptures were produced at Monash University’s Life Drawing classes, and these sculptures were then interpreted into drawings.

"The exhibition is by the Mainstreet Artwork program, which is jointly managed by Moe Life Skills Community Centre and Cooinda Hill Adult Training Support Service. The program offers the opportunity for members of these two groups to produce artworks under tuition at ARC, the Art Resource Collective in Yinnar," Ms Tegart added.

Prospective exhibitors wishing to take advantage of the refurbished Community Access Gallery in 2005 are encouraged to contact the Latrobe Regional Gallery for conditions, rates of hire and an application form. Exhibitors may include solo and group artists, community groups, organisations and institutions.

The Latrobe Regional Gallery is located at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell, and is open Tuesday to Friday 10am-5pm, and on weekends 11am–4pm. The Gallery is closed Mondays and Public Holidays. For further information about exhibitions at the Gallery, telephone 5128 5700.
