Our new citizens’ origins include Iran, Nigeria, United States of America, United Kingdom, Thailand and Sweden.

Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Veronica Dowman conducted the formal proceedings and Director of Community and Economic Development, Steven Piasente was MC.

Cr Dowman congratulated Miss Ameetkaur Duggal, born in Iran, now living in Wonthaggi, Mr Ebube Chukwu Okoli, born in Nigeria, now living in Cape Woolamai, Mrs Andrea Lamar Olsen and Mr Lars Herlov Olsen born in United States of America, now living in Sunderland Bay, Ms Paulette Francine Smith, born in United Kingdom, now living in Cowes, Mrs Paradee Kayla Titulaer, born in Thailand, now living in Cape Woolamai and Ms Victoria Monica Nadja Wolk, born in Sweden, now living in Wonthaggi on choosing Australia as their new home.

"Making the decision and commitment to become an Australian citizen is a courageous step and something that each person would have put a lot of thought into," said Cr Dowman.

As part of the formalities, each candidate came forward to read their pledge, and was then handed their Australian Citizen Certificate and gifts which included an Australian native plant.

Candidates apply for Citizenship to the Federal Department of Immigration and Citizenship; however it is Council’s responsibility to hold the Australian Citizenship Ceremonies on a regular basis throughout the year.

"This event is a way to formally welcome new citizens to their place of residence and to Australia, and it is an honour for us to have this role." said Cr Dowman.

The next Bass Coast Shire Council Citizenship Ceremony will be held on 18 July 2012.
