Judges, Juliette Hanson, Rodney James and Raelene Sharp announced the winner at the opening of Your Art Collection exhibition on Friday, 22 September at the Cowes Cultural Centre.

Judging took place during the afternoon. Rodney James spoke on behalf of the judging panel, explaining the choice behind awarding Minah Swansong.

"This work is an expression of something fresh and unique, where the artist has stepped outside to say new things. The painting is compositionally put together, has good tonal values, and the brushwork is not overworked," Mr James said.

"Having only sixteen works to judge did not make our decision easy. These sixteen pieces are the cream of the crop; we spent two hours examining every piece before we decided on the winner."

The exhibition includes works from four Artists, who had each won a YAC award during the year, progressing them to this final exhibition and a chance at taking out the winning prize.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Pam Rothfield, opened the exhibition and congratulated the artists and community groups involved in the Your Art Collection awards during the year.

"I would like to acknowledge the hard work of the Artists’ Society of Phillip Island who have done a fabulous job of hanging the exhibition, assisting with the opening night event and who will be manning this exhibition during its public opening hours," Cr Rothfield said.

"I found a fabulous quote from Pablo Picasso: 'The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls.'

"Thank you to our community art organisations for all of the work you do to support our local artists, and to share your passion, colour and creativity with our community."

All four artists Diana Edwards, Jill Rogers, Tom Tyrrell and Diana Wilson, were congratulated and awarded on the night.

The exhibition continues until Sunday, 1 October and is open daily from 10.00am – 4.00pm at the Cowes Cultural Centre, 91-97 Thompson Avenue, Cowes. Following the exhibition, the winning work can be viewed in the Bass Coast Civic Centre foyer in Wonthaggi.
