Entrants called for Baw Baw Art Acquisition Program

Baw Baw Shire Council is calling for all interested local artists to place an expression of interest for the annual art acquisition prize. Submissions of interest close on 1 May 2006.

Council Mayor, Cr Ian Clark said the acquisition program presents local artists with a great opportunity to submit work to be considered for purchase and exhibition. "Each year Baw Baw Shire purchases selected pieces of local art to form part of our permanent art collection. We want to support the talents of our local artists and encourage all artists to submit their interest," said Cr Clark

Artwork to be submitted can be of any medium and may be two or three-dimensional including, but not limited to, paintings, sculpture, digital media, and artefacts.

Artists who are then selected to exhibit and have their work considered for purchase will form an exhibition open to the public that will be held at the Arts Centre Warragul in early June. The pieces to be purchased are judged independently by a panel consisting of experienced members of the Arts and Cultural Advisory Committee, Council representatives and an external expert who this year, is the director of the Latrobe Regional Gallery. At the exhibition an award for the people’s choice will also be determined from votes from the attending public.

An additional sum of money is set aside from the acquisition fund to support the development of community or public art. This year the Arts and Cultural Advisory Committee, who oversee the allocation of the fund, have determined to allocate $5000 to support the Women’s Compass Network for the development of the Linear Park Arts Discovery Trail. This will enable the group to continue with the very successful artistic bollards installations and will enable a community mural to be painted on an existing shelter along the trail.

The community will have the ability to become involved in the project through art classes to be held at the Warragul Neighbourhood House learning centre where, under the guidance of an experienced mural artist, the design for the mural will be developed. In partnership with the Arts and Cultural Advisory Committee this design will be approved and then painted by the community and interested artists. The mural will then be installed and maintained in the shelter by Council.

Artists wishing to place an expression of interest for the Arts Acquisition program should contact Council’s Cultural Development Officer, Karen Whitaker-Taylor on 5624 2407 or email karen.whitaker-taylor@bawbawshire.vic.gov.au
