Phillip Island Netball Club Lights UpA grant of $9,083 for the Phillip Island Netball Club was announced today by the Member for Western Port Province, Geoff Hilton MP. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 24th April 2006 - Back to News The announcement took place at the Cowes Oval in front of a crowd of local school children.
The funding is part of a $10 million Country Football Netball program, a joint Victorian Government and Australian Football League (AFL) initiative.
The Phillip Island Netball Club will use the money to install lights on their netball courts, so matches and training can take place at night.
President of the Phillip Island Netball Club, Mary Bourke, said the club appreciated the support from the State Government and the AFL.
"We are only a small club with limited access to funding," said Ms Bourke.
"This is a wonderful gift to us. We are currently very limited in our use of this area.
"The lights will allow night training sessions, night team and twilight netball competitions," continued Ms Bourke.
Representatives from Bass Coast Shire Council, the Victorian Country Football League, Netball Victoria and Department of Victorian Communities attended the announcement.
In addition, football and netball clinics took place for students from Cowes Primary School. Brooke Thompson from the Melbourne Kestrels put a group of students through their paces on the court. Ms Bourke said the opportunity for local children to work with elite sports people was fantastic.
The Phillip Island Netball Club project is one of 42 receiving funding in the latest batch of grants. The Country Football Netball Program funding runs over four years, so there are ongoing opportunities for clubs to apply for funding.
