Food safety and delis

Wellington Shire Council has been assisting local delicatessens with guidance and advice on food safety, as part of an ongoing awareness drive to ensure all food establishments in the Shire are aware of, and comply with, legal standards.

By Wellington Shire Council - 21st July 2003 - Back to News

In June the Council’s environmental health team had 40 food samples from delicatessens across Wellington analysed under a routine monitoring programme. They were all ready-to-eat foods such as prepared salads and sliced meats. Seven of the samples fell short of food safety standards - representing a potential health risk.

As part of its standard follow-up procedures the Council is now advising and closely monitoring the premises where problems were found, to ensure that appropriate action has been taken to bring their food safety procedures back up to the mark.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "There are very few incidents of food poisoning in the Shire, which is thanks in no small part to the responsible, conscientious attitude taken by operators of food establishments and regular monitoring by our Environmental Health Officers. These latest results, while of concern, highlight the effectiveness of this monitoring in identifying potential problem areas so that they can be addressed and successfully dealt with before they develop into something more serious."

The Council’s environmental health team has responsibility for monitoring some 370 registered food premises in the Shire. As well as delicatessens these include, restaurants, cafes, supermarkets, petrol stations, bakeries, school canteens, wineries and caterers.
