New maternal and child health centre opens

Traralgon’s new maternal and child health centre, located in the Traralgon civic precinct opened for business today.

By Latrobe City Council - 16th May 2006 - Back to News

The $250,000 new maternal and child health centre has been totally funded by council and is located in the refurbished former Traralgon Shire and Latrobe City offices on the corner of Breed and Kay Streets. The building once contained a warren of small rooms used for administration.

The new maternal and child health centre will be offering parents extended hours, additional resources and better facilities. In addition it is ideally located, adjacent to the central business district, and is close to public transport and other facilities.

The new facility contains four consultation rooms, breastfeeding and changing amenities; and space for parent’s groups, training and drop-in support.

The new entrance way, waiting room and facilities have all been purpose built to be user-friendly for mums with babies and young children. For example doorways and a wide and gentle access ramp at the entranceway, facilitate mothers with prams with ease.

Latrobe City councillor, David Wilson, said that the new centre has been designed to provide a comfortable, relaxed and welcoming environment for parents and children.

"This new central facility will also provide capacity for more innovative and specialised maternal and child health services, while facilitating networking and professional development for nurses," Cr Wilson said.

Completion of the new maternal and child health centre enhances an upgrade of the civic precinct, with this latest project following the opening of the new Traralgon library in the civic centre and the refurbishment of the service centre for service delivery. The function room, council chamber and performing arts centre remain as part of civic precinct without alteration.

"Provision of the new maternal and child health centre will mean a significant improvement in council’s support for new parents," Cr Wilson added.
