Latrobe City Seeks Feedback On Naming ‘Peter Siddle Oval’Latrobe City Council is seeking community feedback on its decision to consider renaming ‘No. 1 Oval’ at the Maryvale Recreation Reserve, Morwell: ‘Peter Siddle Oval’. By Latrobe City - 16th March 2011 - Back to News Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that Peter’s cricket achievements, highlighted by his recent hat-trick against England, would make him worthy of the special recognition.
"Peter commenced his junior cricket with Latrobe Cricket Club before moving onto Premier Club Dandenong to progress his career. He was first selected for the Victorian State team in 2005 and then the Australian Test team in 2008; becoming one of only 414 players to receive the ‘Baggy Green’ since 1877 and is the first test cricketer to come from Latrobe City," Cr White said.
Tanjil Ward Councillor, Bruce Lougheed, said that Peter and his immediate family are supportive of the proposal and believe it may have a positive influence in the community.
"The Latrobe Cricket Club is extremely proud of Peter’s achievements and believes that renaming the oval would encourage more participation among young cricketers who aspire to reach the highest level in the sport.
"The Central Gippsland Cricket Association has also recognised Peter’s achievements by naming an elite squad of the associations’ best young cricketers the ‘Peter Siddle Development Squad’. This squad use the Maryvale Reserve training facilities as their main training location," Cr Lougheed concluded.
