Davis Calls For Wellington Sewerage Support

Liberal Member for Gippsland Province Philip Davis has called on the Bracks Labor Government to support the reticulation of sewerage in Wellington shire.

By Philip Davis - 16th November 2004 - Back to News

Mr Davis said the Wellington municipality was home to Victoria’s largest unsewered town, Loch Sport.

He said there were other towns in Wellington also in desperate need of sewerage services.

"In Wellington shire a proposal has been put forward to Gippsland Water proposing to nominate Loch Sport, Coongulla, Golden Beach, Paradise Beach and Briagolong as towns which ought to be considered in the innovation projects under the country towns sewerage program," Mr Davis told Parliament last week.

"I urge that the minister find the resources to support this initiative, particularly by the Wellington shire, because it is sorely needed in terms of improving the Gippsland Lakes catchment."

Mr Davis said the Labor Government’s recent $30 million commitment to improve sewerage systems in country Victoria simply wouldn’t go far enough.

Mr Davis told Parliament the Coalition government committed $1.2 billion for country water and sewerage upgrades during its time in office.

In addition to the towns in Wellington in urgent need of sewerage services, Mr Davis also listed 23 unsewered South Gippsland towns.

"I make the point by instancing this extraordinary array of country towns that are not sewered and need support," Mr Davis told the Parliament.

"The minister’s program is inadequate.

"Will he advise what support he will give to the proposal by the Wellington shire for the towns I have named?"

Mr Davis said those towns not currently connected to reticulated sewerage faced an uncertain future in terms of proposed developments, property values and concerns surrounding public health and the local environment.
