Latrobe City’s Mayor, Cr Graeme Middlemiss, has welcomed offers by the State Minister for Education and Training, the Hon Lynne Kosky MP, to discuss the future of the new School of Applied Science and Engineering proposed for the Monash University Gippsland Campus at Churchill.

Cr Middlemiss said discussions with the Minister’s office had confirmed that the Minister was willing to hear representations by affected parties, and welcomed the opportunity to put Latrobe City’s views.

"Latrobe City was disappointed by the outcome of the review. Many in the community have in fact questioned the way in which the review was undertaken," Cr Middlemiss said.

"We are also concerned that the proposals now made by the University Council denies students and the region the opportunities deserved, and simply does not meet community expectations. In effect, the proposal even contradicts the foresight demonstrated in establishing the education precinct.

"The education precinct project at the Monash campus is designed to improve secondary level education opportunities, and to strengthen pathways to tertiary opportunities. The project does not sit comfortably with a corresponding reduction of opportunities for students at Monash," Cr Middlemiss said.

"We are keen for the community, stakeholders, the University and the State government to work towards a more acceptable outcome for engineering undergraduates, and we look forward to coming together with the Minister in order to achieve this," Cr Middlemiss added.
