Premier Steve Bracks made the funding commitment during a visit to Bairnsdale.

"It will help us make the point that we are open for business, open for holidays and that this is a great place to be," she said.

"With some of the country's finest road racers coming from all parts of Australia and overseas to compete in this classic and challenging event it will also be a great way to showcase our region."

The Tour of Gippsland begins in Mallacoota on Wednesday, 1 August with a seafront criterium followed by a road race through the picturesque town.

Next day the riders compete in a criterium in Orbost before racing to Lakes Entrance

Metung will be the start point for the third day (Friday, 3 August) when riders tackle a tough road race leg to Omeo.

Next day (Saturday 4, August) riders will compete in a criterium through the streets of Paynesville before heading off on a road race section to Dargo.

The finale will be a spectacular criterium through Bairnsdale’s central shopping and business area.

Cr Urie said the race would provide a great boost for East Gippslanders who have had their share of difficulties.

"We know there is much still to be done to get our region back in order but it’s also time for us to have some excitement," she said.

"The Tour of Gippsland will prove a spectacular and exciting event that we can all enjoy."
