Final Concrete Poured On New Yinnar BridgeResidents Impressed - Bridge Open To Traffic In Early June By Latrobe City Council - 18th May 2002 - Back to News Yinnar’s new bridge across Middle Creek on Yinnar Road will be open to traffic in early June, when the newly poured concrete has cured.
The new concrete structure replaces a timber structure which locals described as ‘having the shakes’, and is being funded from Latrobe City’s timber bridge replacement program.
Latrobe City’s Group Manager Engineering Services, Larry Naismith, said that to ensure the bridge would have a long life, another three weeks needed to pass to allow the concrete to cure properly, before the bridge could be brought into service.
"Effectively the major construction work on the bridge is now completed, with some minor work such as guardrail installation and the reinstatement of the bridge approach pavement still to be done. However, while the bridge may look to all intents and purposes to passing motorists to be at the completed stage, the concrete needs a substantial period to cure and to achieve it’s full strength," Mr Naismith said.
"In the meantime, we ask motorists to continue using the temporary detour with care for just a few more weeks until the new infrastructure can be opened.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said the new bridge once opened would improve safety for road users and provide improved access for residents. "The bridge will firstly provide wider traffic lanes for vehicles, and importantly, separate metre-wide lanes for cyclists. It will also be accessible by heavier vehicles servicing the Yinnar community," Cr Jenkins said.
"There have also been some positive spin-offs for the environment with the new construction. The new bridge has been built in a single span instead of having piles interfering with the stream flow. Rock beaching on the stream banks either side of the bridge has also been incorporated into the design, which will protect the bridge and banks from erosion under flood conditions," Cr Jenkins added.
Local civil and structural engineering consultants, Chris O’Brien and Company Pty Ltd, designed the bridge, with construction work being carried out by local contractor, HCM Constructions Vic Pty Ltd.
