Briagolong Says Thanks To The Great Victorian Bike RideThe small country town of Briagolong was bursting at the seams yesterday with 3,700 bike riders and 300 volunteers taking part in the 20th Anniversary of the Great Victorian Bike Ride. By Wellington Shire Council - 3rd December 2003 - Back to News The Great Victorian Bike Ride travelled 87km from Bruthen to arrive in Briagolong on the third day of their journey. School children lined the roads, as the weary travellers made their way through the town. The entourage were greeted with warm country hospitality from the tight knit community, of little more than 548 locals.
Said one of the bike riders: " Briagolong or Briag as the locals call it, have put on a great show. Their friendly, smiling faces and cheers of congratulations as we rode into town really made us feel welcome and proud of our achievements".
Vincent Ciardulli, Events Director of the Great Victorian Bike Ride said he was extremely pleased with the way the community worked together to make this such an enjoyable visit.
The bike riders emersed themselves in all aspects of the local community from the sausage sizzles and $2 massages, to a pot at the local pub.
‘Apples’ the local publican said: "It was one of the busiest days we have ever had".
There were similar success stories from other local businesses. The Kindergarten made over $1,000 for the day, which will go towards much needed facilities and equipment. The local community has benefited financially and has also created a wonderful country atmosphere that has positioned itself as a unique holiday destination.
The professionalism and organisation of the day’s proceedings can be attributed to the Briagolong Traders and Tourism Association, comprised of 12 members who have spent the last three months planning the celebrations.
Darren Randle the only local butcher and member of the Traders Association stated:
" The committee really got out there and made things happen."
Briagolong successfully showcased its best features, from the historic buildings such as the Mechanics Institute and the Blue Pool, to the open and friendly attitude of the locals.
As quickly as the Great Victorian Bike Ride had arrived into town with their eighty support vehicles they were gone. There were only a few stragglers grabbing a quick bite at the Briag bakery and a few of the bike ride volunteers returning the recreation reserve to its pristine condition by lunch time.
The ride will travel through Yarram on the fifth day of the tour (Wednesday 3rd December) where the riders will be treated to a much deserved rest day.
