Support Flows To Latrobe Valley Multicultural Seniors Groups Seven multicultural seniors groups in the Latrobe Valley will share over $12,000 of funding from the Victorian Government following an announcement today from the Member for Morwell Russell Northe. By Russell Northe - 16th March 2011 - Back to News These grants are aimed specifically at supporting multicultural senior citizens clubs to hold regular social and community strengthening activities.
Successful organisations include:

• Italian Catholic Federation Morwell
• Gippsland Croatian Association
• Greek Orthodox Community of Gippsland, Elderly Citizens Group
• International Women’s Group
• Morwell Senior Italian Citizens Club
• Polish Senior Citizens Club Morwell
Each year the Victorian Multicultural Commission runs a Community Grants Program to provide support to Victoria’s culturally and linguistically diverse communities, to develop and sustain local community organisations and programs, said Mr Northe.
"The aim of the grants program is to strengthen the capacity of individuals to manage their own affairs, to participate in and influence their local communities and to participate in the benefits available to them as members of the community.
"Importantly, these grants help to address the needs of our multicultural communities, combat the disadvantages faced by many of these communities while at the same time promoting community cohesion and harmony.
"Victoria has been enriched by the presence of people from all over the world."
Nearly 24% of Victoria’s population was born overseas. Victorians come from more than 200 countries, speak more than 230 languages and dialects and follow more than 120 religious faiths.
These grants will assist our elderly citizens from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to hold regular activities and events which will provide them with friendship and support in their later years.
