Ingram urges government to commit to infrastructure projects

By Craig Ingram - 23rd September 2005 - Back to News

Gippsland East MP, Craig Ingram, has urged the Minister for State and Regional Development, John Brumby, to include a number of important projects in his electorate in the State Government’s major Provincial Statement, which will be released later this year.

The statement aims to establish a framework to drive population, employment and investment growth in provincial Victoria over the next five to 10 years.

"There are a number of very important infrastructure projects that I would like to think the government would give serious consideration to funding," Mr Ingram told the Parliament.

"These include projects like the Mallacoota boat ramp, currently subject to an environment effects statement (EES).

"Another very important regional project is sand management at Lakes Entrance. Because of the artificial entrance, sand accumulates inside the entrance, and Gippsland Ports are after a replacement for the Sandpiper. Implementing a bypass system to move the sand from one side of the entrance to the other, and long term we need to look at replacing the April Hamer, which is a large capital investment."

Mr Ingram said that considering the large areas of National Parks and State Forest in Gippsland East, funding for public land tourism infrastructure is essential.

"Among projects suggested for my area is a coastal walk from Cape Conran all the way through to the New South border, linking up with the section through to Eden. It is a beautiful area, and if the right infrastructure were put in place people would come from all around the world to see it. It would lift the profile of our National Parks in the region. Other projects include the Tulloch Ard drive through the Snowy River National Park and walking tracks in the Tulloch Ard Gorge.

"There are a number of other infrastructure needs in the electorate, including upgrading rural roads and bridges; further extension of natural gas; areas like Macalister Irrigation District are in need of further funding for irrigation infrastructure; and to assist smaller communities to develop community plans and providing funding to ensure that those plans are implemented.

"I have raised this issue with the Treasurer, and he has discussed it with local councils. I have asked that the government includes these projects in the provincial Victoria statement and look forward to the statement being released in November 2005," Mr Ingram concluded.
