McGauran must address country of origin labelling: Ingram

Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has called on both the State and Federal Agriculture Ministers to guarantee real outcomes in country-of-origin labelling at their meeting on Friday.

By Craig Ingram - 27th October 2005 - Back to News

Mr Ingram described the current country of origin labelling as "totally inadequate and deceptive".

"Consumers deserve to know and want to know if products they are purchasing are imported or Australian," Mr Ingram said.

"Product labels need to be clear, easy to read and clearly identify the country of origin and production so that consumers can make an informed decision.

"Amongst the worst examples on manufactured goods are some orange juice labels promoting ‘Made in Australia’, when the main ingredient is imported orange juice concentrate.

"The consumer has to read the smallest print on the back of the package to find that the ingredients are imported."

Mr Ingram said the latest comments from Federal Agriculture Minister, Peter McGauran, on the position he is taking to the meeting will not please either consumers or growers.

"State and Federal Agriculture Ministers need to stand up and fight for Australian farmers and consumers and demand clear country-of-origin labelling on the front of all packaging," he said.

"When efficient Australian producers are being undercut by dumped imported products, and consumers are being ripped of by deceptive packaging, the campaign to buy Australian cannot work.

"Governments must stop pandering to the packaging companies and the importing processors, and selling out Australian producers in free trade agreements.

"This is the last chance to have real changes to country-of-origin labelling to allow consumers to make informed choices," Mr Ingram concluded.
