Holiday Home Owners Arrive For ChristmasHoliday home owners looking forward to enjoying their regular Christmas break in Bass Coast are being advised to plan ahead. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 6th December 2006 - Back to News Over summer the local population of the Shire more than doubles, as people arrive at their holiday homes.
This year, there are a number of factors to consider, in addition to dealing with the traditional holiday crowds and traffic. Visitors also need to be aware of water restrictions and fire danger.
Bass Coast Shire Council’s Special Events Coordinator, Frank Angarane says most holiday home owners are aware of the traffic issues around the holiday season.
"But it really is important that people factor in peak travel times and special events when they are planning their trip.
"Try to avoid peak travel times, such as Friday nights," advised Mr Angarane.
"And take into account where the public holidays fall, as this always means increased traffic."
Boxing Day is traditionally a heavy traffic day for Bass Coast, as people arrive at their holidays after celebrating Christmas Day at home.
Bass Coast hosts a number of significant events over the summer period, including the V8 Supercars next weekend and Pyramid Rock Festival at New Year, which attract a large number of visitors. Anyone planning a trip to the area should be aware of when events are occurring and plan their trips accordingly. A full list of events is available on Council’s website at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au .
Mr Angarane also recommended that people have plenty of water and a few snacks in the car when they travel.
"At this time of year, the trip to Bass Coast can be slower than usual and we don’t want people to be caught out without water in the warmer weather," said Mr Angarane.
Friday 22 and Saturday 23 December are expected to be heavy traffic days as people arrive at their holiday homes for Christmas. It is also likely that Friday 29 and Saturday 30 will be busy as well, as people make their way down for New Year’s Eve.
People visiting Bass Coast over the summer are also advised that the Shire is in a Fire Danger Period. Fires in the open air are restricted throughout the summer. In addition, the areas from Phillip Island to The Gurdies and across to Dalyston are on Stage 4 water restrictions. Stage 4 restrictions prohibit most outdoor water use, including watering lawns or gardens and washing boats or cars.
