Latrobe City welcomes ASIC announcement

Latrobe City Council has welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement that the sale of ASIC’s registry will not go ahead.

Mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said the announcement would provide some stability for the region.

"We’re delighted that the Federal Government has acknowledged that the ASIC Registry is an asset to them and to this community.

"The potential sale of ASIC’s registry caused uncertainty for those employed at the Traralgon office, as well as their families and the wider community. It is a relief that they can head into the Christmas period with the knowledge that their jobs are to remain Traralgon-based," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"With this asset now safe and secure as a part of our regional economy, we strongly urge the Federal Government to consider options to expand its footprint in Latrobe City as part of its ongoing commitment to a just and respectful economic transition.

"We know that housing government departments and functions outside of metropolitan locations provides economic security for rural and regional towns. ASIC employs more than 230 local people and the flow-on effect for our local towns is invaluable.

"Latrobe City has previously called on both state and federal governments to consider relocating more departments to our region. Regional diversification is a proven method of creating employment opportunities locally, whilst also delivering quality service to government.

"It’s a strategy that has been used to great effect in other regional locations such as Geelong and we’d encourage the Government to consider Latrobe City a worthy site for such an investment." Cr O’Callaghan concluded.
