Traralgon Post Office Officially Heritage Listed Traralgon Post Office Whilst it has long been the pride of the central business district of Traralgon, the Traralgon Post Office’s inclusion on the Commonwealth Heritage List has confirmed its status and value in the community. By Latrobe City - 16th December 2011 - Back to News The Minister for Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities, the Hon Tony Burke MP listed the Traralgon post office as one of 43 post offices around the country to be identified in the Commonwealth Heritage List.
Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Ed Vermeulen, said that whilst locals were already aware of the heritage value of the building, it was significant to have it officially recognised nationally.
"The listing is something the whole Latrobe City community should take pride in. Heritage listings can boost tourism by adding a point of attraction in a town, recognising the history of a place - its origins, cultural and social value and uniqueness, as well as its role in the community. Post offices by their very nature played a significant role in the development of towns around the state and often heralded a town’s growth and prosperity," Cr Vermeulen said.
The Traralgon post office is one of a small group of post and telegraph offices and residences that was built in combination with a courthouse, colonial offices and sub-treasury. Constructed in 1886, it is an excellent example of a public building fusing architectural styles of the Federation period. The siting and scale of the building recognised the significant role of Traralgon as a communications and administrative centre of the region during the 1880s and after.
Ward Councillor, Dale Harriman, said that the Traralgon post office satisfied six of the nine criteria for Commonwealth Heritage Listing including rarity, aesthetic characteristics and social value.
"We have always appreciated its beauty, its prominent position, its historical value and the fact that it still operates as a post office. Now the rest of the state and the nation can come and appreciate it too," Cr Harriman concluded.
