Innovation in Safety – Latrobe leading the way

The third annual Innovation Festival Forum in Community Safety Promotion will be held on Wednesday 11 May at the Churchill Netball and Football Social Club rooms.

By Latrobe City Council - 28th April 2005 - Back to News

The Latrobe City sponsored forum highlights the challenges, discussing the facts, figures and issues, and provides an opportunity to workshop solutions with representatives from community agencies, government, corporate and the business sector.

Latrobe City’s Manager Community Safety, Henk Harberts, said that previous forums have included speakers and activities around alcohol and drugs, violence, safety in public places, falls, crime, health and wellbeing, Safer Design, road trauma and neighbourhood safety promotion activities.

"This year the forum will again feature a number of speakers who will set the tone for the afternoon workshops. Proposed discussion groups will focus on crime and violence, road safety, alcohol and drugs as well as environmental safety concerns," Mr Harberts explained.

"The Latrobe community is an accredited World Health Organisation ‘Safe Community’ – conferred in 1996. This global program encourages communities to collaborate and highlight local solutions and activity around ‘Safety for All’. The Latrobe community works on promoting the preventability of all sorts of injury, harm and hazards – factors which lead to death and disability in our community," Mr Harberts said.

"Safety Innovations such as the Walking School Bus, Neighbourhood Renewal activities, Bike Ed Challenge, Alcohol Accords, Safety Assessments, Falls Prevention – Tai Chi for balance and strength, Safety Ville and many others will feature at the Innovation in Safety forum.

Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Bruce Lougheed, said that the annual innovation festival event was of major importance in highlighting that ‘safety for all’ is a major focus of our community addressed in Vision 2021 – the future for Latrobe Valley.

"Community safety and liveability are strongly linked, and the annual forum allows the various local and regional partners to get together and promote a safer community for Latrobe," Cr Lougheed said.

Those wishing to attend the forum will need to register with Henk Harberts, Manager Community Safety at Latrobe City, telephone 5128 5634
