Celebrating 150 years

Wellington Shire Council is inviting the community to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Alberton District Road Board next Wednesday (22 November).

The Road Board was established in 1856 for the purpose of constructing and maintaining roads throughout the district.

"The Alberton District Road Board played a significant role in our history" said Cr Malcolm Hole, Mayor of Wellington Shire Council.

It was the first Road Board in Gippsland and in fact it went on to become the first proclaimed shire in Gippsland."

"So the Alberton District Road Board was the beginning of local government in Gippsland" said Cr Hole.

"We invite all community meetings to come along and celebrate this historical event."

A plaque will be unveiled at Tarraville, at 10.30am on the site of the old tollhouse.

Current Councillors will then re-enact the first meetings of the Alberton District Road Board at the Regent Theatre in Yarram at 12.30pm.

A public reception will follow

All members of the public are invited the plaque unveiling, re-enactment and the public reception.
