From citizen to councillor - are you ready?

An information session for prospective candidates in Latrobe City’s council elections will be held from 7pm to 9pm on Tuesday 30 August 2005, in the Nambur Wariga Meeting Room at the corporate headquarters in Commercial Road Morwell.

General elections for Latrobe City Council will take place on Saturday 26 November 2005 and prospective councillors will be able to nominate for all nine council wards.

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said citizens considering the transition from citizen to councillor, but who are not quite certain what is required or how to go about it, should attend.

Mr Buckley said the information session being run by the Municipal Association of Victoria, will outline the roles and responsibilities involved in being a councillor.

"Latrobe City officers, together with Municipal Association of Victoria and Victorian Electoral Commission speakers will provide information about the council area and advice on who can nominate, how to nominate, and what is required of a councillor," Mr Buckley explained.

"Councillors from neighbouring municipalities will also be discussing their own experiences in local government, which will assist prospective candidates gain an understanding of what the public will expect of their councillors, time commitments, rewards and election campaign techniques.

"Citizens contemplating standing as a councillor and those interested in the role of local government are strongly encouraged to attend this information session," Mr Buckley said.

The session will include an opportunity for open discussion and questions. It is free of charge to attend and each registered participant will receive a comprehensive information kit.
