Wellington welcomes RACV calls for duplication of Princes HighwayBy Wellington Shire Council - 18th March 2005 - Back to News Wellington Shire Council is pleased that the RACV has backed its long-running campaign for duplication of the Princes Highway between Traralgon and Sale – and welcomes the organisation’s lobbying of Federal Government to accelerate work on the much-needed road improvement.
At their Council Meeting last night (15 March) Wellington Shire Councillors were unanimous in their backing of the RACV’s campaign, which also urges the Federal Government to upgrade the Princes Highway right through to the New South Wales border.
A council letter of support will now be sent to the RACV, together with a copy of the Gippsland Integrated Transport Study - prepared for the Gippsland Local Government Network as part of its strategic planning for the region and for the South East Australian Transport Strategy Inc - which presents a strong case for duplication of the highway. The council will also make representation to the Federal Treasurer and Federal Minister for Transport and Regional services, calling for the Princes Highway improvements.
The RACV’s push for the highway is included in its submission to the Federal Treasurer Peter Costello, in which it lobbies for road funding in the next budget - urging the Treasurer to redirect $560 million dollars previously allocated to the Mitcham Frankston Freeway to other roads.
Said Wellington Chief Executive Officer: "We greatly welcome the RACV’s public position on the Princes Highway and its lobbying efforts, which further strengthen our own concerted campaign directed at the Federal Government for highway duplication between Traralgon and Sale.
"The Princes Highway is the major coastal arterial route linking Melbourne with Sydney and handles significant tourism, business and freight traffic. Its importance to Victoria, New South Wales and Australia is being disregarded by government. It’s very important that the stretch between Traralgon and Sale is upgraded to increase safety, and to improve road traffic flows and communication links. This would further stimulate the Sale and Wellington economy by increasing our accessibility and competitiveness relative to other expanding regional centres."
