Feedback wanted on Draft Tourism StrategyRead more about the future direction of tourism for Phillip Island and San Remo. By news@gippsland - 27th April 2016 - Back to News In 2035, Phillip Island and San Remo will be recognised both nationally and globally as a world leading sustainable tourism destination, where tourism is embraced by the community according to the Phillip Island and San Remo Draft Tourism Strategy released today by Bass Coast Shire Council.
"We are entering an important phase in setting the future direction for tourism," Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Jordan Crugnale, said.
"The announcement of the State funding for the Penguin Centre last week is the start of a new era in sustainable tourism for Phillip Island and San Remo, and the Draft Tourism Strategy provides the vision and the road map to the whole destination to our goal.
"We need industry and the community to get on board."
Development of the Draft Tourism Strategy has followed an extensive schedule of research, engagement, development and delivery, with over 300 community members, industry and stakeholder groups consulted to date.
Everyone who has an interest in the future of Phillip Island and San Remo is encouraged to provide feedback. The Strategy is available on Council website at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au/PhillipIsland2035, and the strategy’s Facebook page at Phillip Island Tourism Strategy 2035.
Community and industry are invited to comment on the Draft Strategy over the next four weeks, with submissions closing on Friday, 27 May.
Community Open Houses in Cowes and Newhaven
Two open houses on the Draft Strategy will also be held during the feedback period:
- Tuesday 24 May, 2016 – 4.00pm to 7.00pm at Phillip Island Visitor Centre, Newhaven
- Wednesday 25 May, 2016 – 4.00pm to 7.00pm at Cowes Cultural Centre Hall – 91-97 Thompson Ave, Cowes
No need to book – just come along for a chat.
Council has partnered with Regional Development Victoria, Tourism Victoria, Destination Phillip Island, and Phillip Island Nature Park to develop a 20-year tourism strategy for the Island to help ensure the long-term viability and sustainability of the tourism sector.
The Draft Strategy has been prepared by a team of Australia’s tourism planning experts, led by EarthCheck and TRC Tourism, to develop and deliver a comprehensive Tourism Strategy for Phillip Island to 2035.
The final strategy will be released in July 2016 following feedback from community and industry.
