Good Access Is Good BusinessNominations are currently being sought for the "Good Access Is Good Business Awards". By Bass Coast Shire - 14th December 2005 - Back to News A Steering Committee established in Bass Coast Shire to plan activities around International Day of People with disAbility 2005, is calling for the nominations. The committee comprises Council staff, representatives from the Access Advisory Committee and the Award sponsors – Your Employment Solutions, Worksolutions Gippsland and Chisholm Institute of TAFE (Bass Coast Campus).
December 3 each year has been declared International Day of People with disAbility by the United Nations. On or around this day, activities are held world-wide to acknowledge the valued contribution people with a disability make to their community.
Bass Coast Shire Council’s RuralAccess Worker, Kathryn Pryor, explained the purpose of the Awards Program is to recognise and promote business and organisations in Bass Coast Shire that demonstrate practices which are inclusive of people with a disability.
"We want to find out who is making an effort to be accessible and inclusive to people with a disability," said Ms Pryor.
"For a business this could mean providing employment opportunities, having good physical access to their premises or just through good customer service to people with a disability.
"For an organisation this might be things like welcoming people with a disability as members, providing information in a range of accessible formats or staging an inclusive community event.
Ms Pryor said that businesses or organisations could be nominated by members of the community, or self-nominated.
"It’s really important to acknowledge these business and organisations as they play a vital role in helping make our community more accessible and inclusive.
"Please, if you do know a business that is leading the way in this area, make sure you nominate them.
"They deserved to be recognised," said Ms Pryor.
Nominations for the Good Access Is Good Business Awards must be returned to Gippsland Disability Resource Council by Wednesday 11 January 2006.
The Awards will be presented at a Business Breakfast at The Wonthaggi Club on Friday 3 February 2006. Nomination forms are available on Council’s website (www.basscoast.vic.gov.au) or from any of the sponsors.
