It’s time to recognise the achievements, hours of service and outstanding contributions of our older residents, with nominations now open for Latrobe City Council’s Senior Citizen of the Year.

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Michael Rossiter, said Council had put the call out for nominations earlier this year to allow for a decision to be made before Council elections are held in October.

"Many older Latrobe City residents have been volunteering for years across a variety of organisations: from kinder committees, to church groups, to service clubs. Their years of giving back to the community deserve to be acknowledged."

"While nominees will remind us they don’t do it for the accolades, it’s nice to let them know how much we appreciate the time and effort they spend contributing to our community."

Cr Rossiter said last year’s winner, John Henry, was recognised for his years of dedication to the Tyers township.

"John’s work within the Tyers and District Community Association, the CFA and Jean Galbraith Community Group represents the kind of community spirit worth celebrating."

"We know there are countless other older residents that, like John, have quietly gone about their business for years and really deserve some recognition for their efforts."

"If you know a dedicated community member whose praises are going unsung you can nominate them by filling out a nomination form online at www.latrobe.vic.gov.au/senioroftheyear or collecting a form from a service centre or library," Cr Rossiter concluded.

Nominations must be returned by Friday, 29 July. The winner will be announced at a special ceremony during Seniors Week, 2 to 9 October 2016. More details about the festival will be available in the coming months. The Aged and Disability Service Team welcomes ideas for Seniors Week events and activities and can be contacted on 1300 367 700.
